Want to simplify your patient assessment and management, whilst improving your outcomes? Join us on Part C and learn how to use MDT to systematically assess, classify and treat lumbar spine and lower limb problems. This course is worth 5 MDT CPD points for credentialed and diplomate members.


Course Overview

This 28 hour course will review and advance the theory and practical application of the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) in relation to Lumbar Spine problems. It will also introduce the concept of MDT in the assessment and management of lower limb musculoskeletal disorders.

The course will help participants expand their ability to assess, classify and manage patients with lower back problems, related referred pain and functional limitations. The theory and practical application of MDT for lower limb musculoskeletal disorders is also presented.

Lectures, problem solving, reflective learning, clinical reasoning, practical activities, case studies and patient demonstrations are utilised to ensure participants gain a broader knowledge of MDT, within a biopsychosocial framework. 

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and extensively practice the MDT assessment, classification and management process, including the application of both self-treatment and clinician procedures for the lumbar spine and lower limb.

Patient demonstrations are used to illustrate the assessment / re- reassessment process and allow participants to get a realistic impression of the impact of the MDT system on different patient presentations.

The course includes an illustrated electronic manual (PDF file format) and reference list.

On successful completion of the course, you will receive:

  • A Certificate of Completion (electronic only)
  • The 'self-help' book Treat Your Own Knee.  The book can be a resource to use with many of your patients to help them understand and implement McKenzie self-management principles and exercises.
  • Six-months access to the McKenzie Institute International Education website to view the patient and clinician procedure videos to help consolidate the practical skills that were covered during the Part C course.  

Lumbar Spine

This course will help participants develop more advanced knowledge and skills to:

  1. Identify, discuss and solve common problems encountered in the application of MDT for patients with lumbar spine problems.
  2. Analyse and discuss the MDT assessment and how it assists with patient classification.
  3. Consider the application of clinician forces, and how they fit with MDT’s ‘Progression of Forces’ concept.
  4. Perform clinician techniques for the lumbar spine at an advanced level and to identify difficulties with or variations of, their application.
  5. Analyse case studies and / or role plays of patients presenting with lumbar spine symptoms and determine the appropriate classification and management plan.

Lower Limb 

Participants will be provided with the introductory knowledge and basic skills to begin to:

  1. Describe and discuss the current evidence base for the use of MDT for lower limb musculoskeletal disorders.
  2. Describe the characteristics of Derangement, Dysfunction and Postural syndromes as they present in lower limb musculoskeletal disorders.
  3. Perform MDT assessments for lower limb musculoskeletal disorders and determine the presence of the MDT syndromes.
  4. Design appropriate management programs for patients who present with Derangement, Dysfunction and Postural syndromes in the lower limb.
  5. Analyse case studies and / or roleplays of patients presenting with lower limb symptoms and determine the appropriate classification.

  • Part A: The Lumbar Spine

Practical Sessions

During the practical sessions, participants are requested to wear suitable clothing, allowing easy access to the lumbar spine and lower limbs.

Professional Liability Insurance

As this is a practical course that may involve performance of exercise and manual therapy procedures on other participants, attendees are required to have suitable professional liability insurance.

Order of Courses

  • Part A must be completed first and Part D last. 
  • Participants may choose the order in which they complete Parts B and C. 
  • Full completion of Parts A-D is a prerequisite for the International Credentialing Exam.
